Musical Practice Timer

Automatically track your real practice time using on-device AI. No breaks counted.

How to Use

  1. Open the app and tap the Start button.
  2. Grant microphone access when prompted โ€” the app needs it to hear when you're playing.
  3. Place your phone near your instrument and start playing. The timer starts automatically when sound is detected.
  4. When you take a break, the timer pauses on its own. It resumes when you start playing again.
  5. Tap Stop when your session is done. The session is saved to your history.

To change the instrument, detection threshold, or daily goal, tap the Settings icon in the top-right corner.

Frequently Asked Questions

The timer isn't starting when I play.

Make sure microphone access is granted: go to iPhone Settings โ†’ Musical Practice Timer โ†’ Microphone and toggle it on. Also check that the correct instrument is selected in Settings. If your instrument isn't detected reliably, try lowering the Detection Threshold slider.

The timer keeps running even when I stop playing.

This is by design โ€” there's a short grace period before the timer pauses, so brief rests between phrases don't break your interval. You can adjust the silence gap in Settings, or tap Pause manually if you're taking a longer break.

Does the app record my playing?

No. The app analyses the microphone volume level in real time using an on-device AI model. No audio is ever recorded, stored, or transmitted. Everything runs locally on your device.

Does it work with the screen off?

Yes. Lock your phone and practice freely โ€” the app continues detecting and timing in the background. Unlock any time to check your progress.

Which instruments are supported?

Piano, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drums, violin, cello, trumpet, flute, clarinet, saxophone, and ukulele. Select your instrument in Settings before starting a session.

My session history is missing / data was lost.

Session data is stored locally on your device and is not backed up to the cloud. If you deleted and reinstalled the app, previous sessions cannot be recovered. We recommend using iCloud Backup to protect your device data.
